Decision Day Action in Tucson : We Won’t Go Back

Today, after 50 years of legal precedents affirming the Constitutional right to abortion care, an illegitimate Supreme Court has overturned Roe v Wade and Planned Parenthood v Casey in one earth-shattering decision. As it applies to abortion rights, Roe was the floor, not the ceiling, and now they have ripped the floor out from under us.

We won’t go back.

We are hitting the streets THIS EVENING as part of a nationwide response. Unlike our previous marches and rallies, we do not have a set agenda for this snap action. We are providing space for all of our responses to injustice, and we will do our best to make sure everyone stays safe and hydrated. We have shown grief, we have expressed our anger, now we unleash our primal scream- shaking the foundations of the establishments who seek to oppress us.

This evening, we are facilitating two options for response.

For those who have access to Downtown Tucson, we will be meeting at the Federal Courthouse at 405 W. Congress Street at 7 pm. We will gather and wait for people to arrive, make a brief statement, and then allow the demonstration to evolve organically. If you intend to participate in this action, we recommend parking at El Mercado and riding the streetcar into Downtown Tucson.

Our second snap action is a sidewalk sign holding along Broadway between Alvernon and Randolph Way. We encourage people to utilize Reid Park for the most accessible parking.

Both of these events will take place rain or shine. Please wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, signs, bullhorns, and your fury.

What we need:
We are seeking to expand our de-escalation teams for today’s actions. We do not usually have an issue with counter-protestors at our events, but we are anticipating that today’s decision will embolden the hateful. It is important that we do not engage with their rhetoric, and that we maintain safety so that everyone can participate in our events. If you would like to help be part of our safety team for either location, please email info@tucsonwomensmarch.org.
We are also in need of trained medics to be at each location. The groups we usually work with often disband over the summer. If you have medical training and can be on-hand with a basic first aid kit to assist, please let us know. Our most common first-aid requests are for BandAids and heat-related illness. All participants assume their own risk by attending an event, but we always want to do our best to provide services.

Water/Gatorade donations. If you plan to attend either of our actions and would like to help everyone stay hydrated, please just bring what you’d like to share and hand it out to those around you. For those who intend to stand or walk around, a backpack of water will probably work better than a rolling cooler.

This decision is a direct violation by The Supreme Court, and we will not let up. Today’s actions are not the end of our response to injustice. Please stay tuned to our social media accounts, and keep an eye on your email inbox for next steps in the days to come.
